May 12, 2003 Hossfeld Sets New Track Record In Qualifying, Finishes 6th At Waterford The #4 Mystic Missile team were on fire this past Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, CT. Practice times were consistently fast for much of the practice session. Then Chuck went out early in qualifying and laid down a lap of 13.630 seconds at 99.046 mph, setting a new Featherlite Modified Series track record at the 3/8 mile bullring, and earning Chuck his third career Bud Pole award and first of the season. The top 6 qualified drivers drew for starting position and as luck would have it, Chuck drew the number one spot. Just before dusk the green flag flew for the start of the 150-lap race and Chuck looked as if he would drive the v4 off into the sunset. In the first two laps he had already opened up a half straightaway advantage on the rest of the field. There were several early cautions and contact on a restart caused a tire to go down, forcing Chuck to slow and dropping him back in the pack. A timely caution shortly afterwards allowed Chuck to pit and the #4 team pulled off a very fast stop, changing the right front tire and getting him back on the track in 19th position. He was working his way back up through the field, but several additional cautions hampered his charge to the front as the laps wound down in the race. By the time the checkered flag came out, Chuck had fought his way back to a solid 6th place finish. The #4 team's great effort and Chuck's recovery after the tire trouble allows him to walk away from Waterford maintaining his lead in the Featherlite Modified Series points. Qualifying on the pole, setting a new track record, and finishing 6th after having trouble demonstrates the talent and determination of Chuck and the Mystic River Marina team. The #4 team's next race is this weekend on May 18th in Nazareth, PA for the Service Electric 100. Click here for more results from the Budweiser Modified Nationals at the Waterford Speedbowl. |
