DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
Chuck Hossfeld, of
Ransomville, N.Y., has been selected as the favorite to win the 2004 NASCAR
Featherlite Modified Series Championship by a preseason poll of media who
cover the series.
Hossfeld, who drives the Bob Garbarino-owned Mystic Missile Dodge, collected
142 points in the poll and five first place votes. He finished second to
Todd Szegedy in the 2003 championship chase and was third in the final
standings during the 2002 season.
“I am pleased the media has confidence in our team,” said Hossfeld. “Of
course, I hope at the end of the season they are correct. Winning the
championship is our goal for the season.”
John Blewett III, of Howell, N.J., the third place driver in the 2003
standings, earned 122 points in the poll to finish in second. He also
received four first place votes. Szegedy, the defending Featherlite Modified
Series champion from Ridgefield, Conn., collected 120 points and three first
place votes.
Ted Christopher, of Plainville, Conn., a former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series
national champion, was fourth in the balloting with 108 points. Christopher
was picked by three media members to win the championship. The 2000 champion
– Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. – received 91 points to round out the
Top-5 in the preseason poll.
Three-time series champion Tony Hirschman earned 83 points to lead the
drivers who finished 6th-10th in the poll. The 2003 series Rookie of the
Year Donny Lia was the seventh-highest vote getter with 67. Former champion
Rick Fuller earned 49 points to finish eighth, edging Eddie Flemke by one
point. The 1990 champion, Jamie Tomaino, rounded out the Top-10 with 27
points. Tomaino earned one first place vote.
The Featherlite Modified Series Preseason Top 10 was voted upon by media
members who cover the Featherlite Modified Series including print,
television, radio and Internet outlets. The voting was based off a
descending point scale. Drivers received 10 points for a first-place vote,
nine points for a second-place vote and on down to one point for 10th place.
The Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR’s only-open wheeled racing division,
will conduct its 20th season in 2004.
