Hossfeld Ends Nazareth Chapter Twelfth

Nazareth, PA: When the record books reflect the final NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series event held at the Nazareth Speedway, Chuck Hossfeld's name will be found in the twelfth spot. On a hot Sunday afternoon in the Pocono Mountains the Series made it's final appearance at the Nazareth Speedway, which is said to be closing this season, with the Service Electric 100. Hossfeld and the Mystic Missile Racing Team ended the era with a 12th place finish.

"I have only raced Nazareth a few times," said the third-year Tour competitor, "but I really enjoyed racing here. You hate to lose a great track like Nazareth."

After a qualifying run of 131.440 MPH, Hossfeld hit the grid in the eighth position. By the completion of the first lap the Buffalo, NY driver had motored into the seventh spot. That was the highest position in the running order that Hossfeld would hold during the day.

The Mystic Missile sat in the seventh position through a pair of cautions in the early going. At lap 25, Hossfeld slipped back to the ninth position. On lap 30, he pulled his #v4 tight to the bumper of Jan Leaty in an attempt to regain eighth.

The Mystic Missile team took advantage of a caution period that began at lap 38 to head down pit road on lap 41. In typical fashion, Greg Schroder and crew executed a flawless pit stop to get their driver off pit road first.

"They changed tires and closed up the stagger hoping to tighten up the car," said Hossfeld. "The crew got me off pit road in front of the other guys. It was an awesome pit stop."

Hossfeld lined up 15th on the field for the single-file restart on lap 46. At the halfway marker he ran in the 11th position. At lap 64, he had climbed back to the 9th spot. Less than a lap later, Hossfeld relinquished the position to Ted Christopher, who was making a charge through the field.

Over the final quarter of the event and through a string of caution flags, Hossfeld fluctuated between the 9th and 11th positions. A lengthy clean up for a caution at lap 94 forced a green-white-checker restart.

"There were a bunch of guys battling in front of me and I had to back off a little bit," continued Hossfeld. "Someone got underneath me and then I just got freight trained."

Hossfeld faded back slightly at the finish and came to the checkers in 12th on lap 104. This was the third consecutive 12th place finish for Hossfeld and company.

"We are hoping to build on these finishes as we move forward," concluded Hossfeld.

Next up for Hossfeld and the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series is the 14th Annual Haynes Material 150 at the Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, CT on Friday night, May 28, 2004. For more information on the upcoming event visit www.nascartouring.com or www.staffordmotorspeedway.com.
