Hossfeld Earns Top-5 in Jerry Gradl Motors #20 Modified Debut

Lancaster, NY - A little over a week ago Jerry Gradl Jr. offered Chuck Hossfeld the ride in his #20 modified. Chuck took Jerry up on his offer and together with his crew spent much of the last week getting the car race ready. Last night June 30th, 2005 the car made it's debut at Lancaster Raceway Park in the Race Of Champions Firecracker 75.

Their efforts were worthwhile as the car was fast off the trailer, and the team was optimistic of their chances for that evening's race.

With almost thirty cars in attendance for the big event, the cars would be split into three heats. Chuck would start the third heat from the fouth position behind fellow Lancaster veretern Sege Fidanza (77). Almost immediately from the drop of the green flag Fidanza and Hossfeld jumped out front. Chuck spent a couple of laps working on Sege before diving underneath him on the front straightway to take the lead at lap 5. Hossfeld would hold on to win the heat, qualifying him for the redraw.

The top 12 drivers redrew for starting position. Chuck drew 5th for the start, with DIRT Modified driver Todd Burley (89) grabbing the top spot.

As the green flagged waved, Hossfeld dropped the hammer and quickly moved into 3rd. Caution came out on lap 5 for a spinning Karl Hehr (59) during which defending track champion Dave Wollaber (5) broke a spindle ending his day. On the ensuing restart fellow NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver Eric Beers (19) jumped out to the lead with Hossfeld close behind in second.

Hossfeld would drive around Beers on the outside to take the lead before another caution on lap 17. Hossfeld got a good jump on the restart, but problems with the transmission would hamper his restarts all night. Beers managed to get by Chuck, but the Hot Shoe again passed Beers to regain the lead.

Chuck would stretch out the lead a little each lap until he pitted for a tire during a lap 32 caution. The crew jumped into action. Jackman Gary Guidotti hoisted the #20 while tire changer Mike Harris hit the lugs. Dave Harris handed off the new right rear, Mike Harris nailed the lugs again, Guidotti dropped the jack and Hossfeld was gone. With the quick stop, Hossfeld lost no positions on pit road, but with many of the other teams pitting earlier in the race, he found himself running near the back of the pack.

The restart would have to wait as an extensive caution period followed after two cars tangled in turn one and needed to be pulled apart. Several laps after the restart things got bunched up in turn two. Hossfeld got sideways and Tom McGrath (12) with no where to go found himself getting launched over the front end of Hossfeld's #20 modified and ending his night.

Hossfeld drove into the pits dragging a flat left front tire that was sending a shower of sparks down the side of the car. As the team went to work changing the flat and looking over the front-end for additional damage, they found that the top bolt for the left front shock was sheared off. Veteran crew member Henry Ketch used some quick thinking as he went to work wrestling the broken bolt from shock. Ketch and crew chief Jim Rudolph were putting the finishing touches on the repair as the field went green.

With a bit of luck on his side, the yellow flag came back out on the restart, and Hossfeld would not lose any laps. However he did have his work cut out for him, with 17 laps to go Hossfeld would restart from 16th position.

As the field went green again, Chuck wasted no time moving forward, and in several laps he found himself running in the top ten, showing that the accident didn't do much to hurt the speed of the Jerry Gradl Motors modified. A well timed caution allowed the field to bunch back up with about eight laps to go. Chuck again drove his way to the front on the restart, but could only manage to work his way up to 5th position by the time the checkers flew.

With the stout performance of the #20 Jerry Gradl Motors modified, and by pulling off a 5th place finish, thanks in part to some quick work in the pits, Chuck and the #20 modified team can walk away with their heads held high. The good finish and strong performance of the car is a great momentum builder for the remainder of the season.

Hossfeld will be at Ransomville Speedway tonight in the #68 Ray MacIver owned dirt sportsman, and at Stafford Motor Speedway on Sunday July 3rd for the rescheduled HAYNES Materials 150 on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
