Hossfeld Grabs Second Top-5 For Jerry Gradl Motors

Lancaster, NY - It was a hot, humid Thursday afternoon as team pulled into Lancaster Raceway Park. This would be the second outing for Hossfeld and crew in the #20 Jerry Gradl Motors modified. Salvaging a 5th place finish after breaking the left front shock a couple of weeks ago in the ROC Firecracker 75, Hossfeld was anxious to get back to Lancaster behind the wheel of the #20.

The car seemed good in practice, and after starting 6th in the heat race, Chuck finished 4th, qualifying him for the night's feature. Lancaster's handicapping system would place Hossfeld 8th on the starting grid of 18 modifieds.

As the field came around to put lap 1 in the books, trouble in the front of the pack sent everyone scrambling. Hossfeld slid sideways through the grass in turn 1 as he evaded trouble, while (77) Sege Fidanza wasn't so lucky, making contact and hitting the wall in turn 1 ending his night early.

It was full moon fever, as a few additional cautions on the ensuing restarts held the race at lap 1 as the cars made about 15 or so laps under caution. When the race finally got green, Hossfeld make a great move, restarting in 6th position he got to the outside and kept his foot in it, quickly passing three cars and moving into 2nd behind (59) Karl Hehr at Lap 3.

Chuck kept constant pressure on Hehr, he tried for several laps to get by on the high side, as the cars of (93) Tim Mangus and defending track champion (5) Dave Wollaber threatened him from behind. Unable to get by Hehr on the outside, Hossfeld dropped back and started to work inside of Hehr. Chuck was underneath Hehr several times coming out of turn four, but just couldn't find enough track to stick the pass.

About lap 12, Hehr pushed a little in turn 2, and Hossfeld took advantage of this by diving to the inside. Side-by-side through 3 and 4, Hehr had a nose on Hossfeld as they crossed the start/finish line. With the inside groove, Chuck was sure to seal the deal this time, but the caution flag flew and the field reverted back to their position on the previous lap, placing Hehr back in the lead.

Hossfeld kept constant pressure on Hehr the remainder of the race, and looked as though he might have a shot at Hehr at they came upon lapped traffic. But Hehr did a great job of navigating through the slower cars in the final laps, and Hossfeld wasn't able to find any racing room to mount a challenge.

Hehr crossed the line taking the checkers and his 3rd win of the season at Lancaster, as Hossfeld followed close behind in 2nd place.

Hossfeld's next race will be at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on July 23rd, 2005 for the Whelen Modified Tour, New England Dodge Dealers 150. He will return to local racing on August 19th at Ransomville Speedway behind the wheel of Ray McIver's #68 dirt sportsman, and on Auguest 20th in the Jerry Gradl Jr. owned #20 modified.
