Local Film Makers Continue Documentary with NASCAR Driver

Buffalo, NY - Keeping up with a race car driver is not easy. Just ask local film makers, James Huntz and Robert Quarantillo who are entering their second year of filming NASCAR driver Chuck Hossfeld with hopes of putting together a feature length documentary.

"The racing, it's never ending," says Quarantillo. "Race car drivers must have the shortest off-seasons of any athlete." This could in fact be true when you look at Hossfeld's schedule which ended in late October and picks up again in early February. "We knew it was going to be a full-time project because we want to capture Chuck and his lifestyle when he is not racing. However, it gets expensive when you're on the road nine or 10 of those months."

Last year Huntz and Quarantillo approached Hossfeld with the idea of making a documentary on racing with the focus on him. Chuck agreed, allowing the two-man crew to follow his every move. "We filmed everything from the long car rides to the track with Chuck, to pre-race qualifying and car adjustments, as well as arguments among drivers and of course a few of Chuck's wins," says Huntz who does most of the editing.

Hossfeld, who races on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, also runs his own race team. "As soon as Chuck finished racing the NASCAR tour he started working on his own car. I think he might take a week off all year long," added Huntz.

Hossfeld and his crew are gearing up for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing in New Smyrna, Florida. Now in its 40th year, the World Series is a nine-day event in which Modified cars such as Hossfeld's race eight of the nights. Last year Hossfeld won two of the eight races and finished no worse than 6th in the other six races, good for 2nd place overall.

"We're looking forward to the New Smyrna trip because there is so much racing in so little time," says Quarantillo. "Instead of taking a trip to New Hampshire or Virginia for one race, we will be able to film Chuck in eight different races. My goal is to make a separate film of just the experience in New Smyrna. I think once people start seeing the footage we have and the story we're telling we will get some funding for the rest of the project. I really believe in our idea."

The trio, (Hossfeld, Huntz and Quarantillo) will host a "backer's party" at the Water Street Landing (formerly the Riverside Inn, in Lewiston) on Saturday, January 14. Tickets are just $20 with proceeds going toward the New Smyrna trip as well as the rest of the season.
