HOSSFELD TAKES NASCAR VICTORY AT SPENCER
 By Gary M. Spaid

WILLIAMSON, NY - Ransomville's Chuck Hossfeld powered Don Ryersee's yellow number 99 Modified to his eighth Spencer Speedway career victory last Friday evening in front of a pack house.

"We'll be here every week the NASCAR Modified tour is idle," stated Hossfeld in victory lane.

In SST action 25 cars answered the call to the green flag, with Chris Finocchario taking the 25-lap feature victory. It was his first ever win in that division.

In Street Stock action Bob Minacapelli powered his Chevrolet to the 20-lap victory. The new Super "6" class was also in action with Kris Hillegeer taking the 10-lap win.

The rained out NORA Limited Supermodifieds were on hand to make up their show. Mike Barnes from Mexico, NY, won the 25-lap NORA feature. His win was his second at the speedway, after also winning last July.

The 30-lap NASCAR Modified feature saw pole sitter Tim McMullen take the lead at the drop of the green. McMullen and Mark Marollo then broke away from the rest of the pack. T.J. Potrzebowski, Hossfeld and Buck Catalano tagged in behind in a torrid battle of their own.

On lap seven both Catalano and Potrzebowski slid off the first turn to bring out the yellow, leaving Hossfeld alone in third. The restart saw Marollo slip backwards to fifth. This put Hossfeld right on McMullen's rear bumper.

Hossfeld was able to use a lap car to complete his pass on McMullen. On lap 16, Hossfeld ducked low exiting the second turn to grab the lead. Three more yellows would slow the race, all for cars stopped around the speedway. The final yellow came on lap 23 setting up a seven lap charge to the checkers. Hossfeld pulled away from the rest of the field and easily won. McMullen finished second followed by the last feature winner Mike Leaty, Patsy Catalano and the SST feature winner Chris Finocchario, who doubles his efforts each week by running both divisions.

Finocchario took the lead in the SST 25-lap feature, passing Chuck Hebing, on lap five. Ten yellow flag periods slowed the event, mostly for cars spinning out. No major accidents occurred during the event.

Zack Shove, from Williamson, lead the first two circuits before Hebing, ducked low down the back stretch to complete his pass for the lead on lap three. A number of yellows then slowed the race and also allowed the pack to be bunched up for restarts. Seven of these yellows came before lap 12 was in the record books.

Finocchario held off Jeff Hamman, Jr. and Shove as these three broke away from the rest of the field in the closing laps. Rounding out the top five were former NORA Limited driver Kris Meyn and Daryl Lewis, Jr.

"We had a broken throttle that caused us some problems tonight. I kept having to double hit the throttle to make her go," stated Finocchario in victory lane. "This is our old car with a new motor added or the winter."

The NORA Limiteds were also on hand, originally scheduled for June 9, but rained out. Seventeen cars answered the call to the starting line for their scheduled 25-lap A-Main event. Heat winner and outside pole sitter Tim Barbeau took the original lead holding off Rob Pullen and Gard Nearbin. Barbeau was able to stretch out his advantage to nearly a full seven car lead before Mike Barnes, who had passed his way into second on lap 10, began to close in on him.

On lap 15, the first of three consecutive laps of yellow flag laps saw John Ketcham slow to a stop on the inside of the back stretch. The restart saw Barnes duck under Barbeau to take the lead. Lap sixteen saw sixth place runner Mike Bond looped his machine in the second turn. One lap later a mad scramble down the front stretch saw third place runner Ron Pullen get squirrelly exiting the fourth turn and spin to the inside of the track. This in turn bunched up the pack resulting in cars slowing and the number 32 of Pat Mullen spinning down the front chute.

Barnes led the remaining laps to take the win followed by Barbeau, Alan Barker, Russ Brown and Sean Walker.

In Street Stock action the race started off with the Shawn Kelly and Don Stevens spinning off the first turn. However both cars returned to the race and the event remained green with Phil Alhart out front in his number 84 Buick Regal.

A number of spins took place during the race with officials waiting for yellows. The results were fewer yellows and more racing without a yellow effecting a driver's race. One yellow did fly, on lap 10, when auto dealer Joseph Neri, driving Amy Catalano's number 54 Chevrolet, looped in between the third and fourth turns in front of the leaders. During this period Alhart had to be sent pit side with an exhaust pipe dragging on the ground. This turned the lead of the race over to Bob Minacapelli, who had been hounding Alhart all race long.

Minacapelli took his number 2 Chevrolet home with a victory. He was followed by Duke Wolanski, Dean Burdick, Roger Worden, Jim Steffenhagen, Jr. Alhart worked his way back to seventh after having that pipe removed from his car during the lap 10 yellow.

In just their second appearance at the track there still remains only three Super 6 cars in action, yet more are expected to be completed by this coming Friday. Kris Hillegeer led all ten laps in their feature run to take the win.

SPENCER NOTES: Joseph Neri took over the driving of the Amy Catalano car. With only some sports car racing experience behind him, Neri held his own, spinning out just once during the feature race….Terry Cheetham was on hand with his number 11 NASCAR Modified. He detonated a motor during pre-race practice and had to sit out the night….New track owner John White was on hand, meeting many of the track personnel….Tony Hanbury almost went for a nasty ride at the start of his SST heat race. He hopped a wheel exiting the second turn and got airborne, coming to rest on his wheels and needing a tow to the pits…Sixty-two cars were on hand for the night's action. A record 27 cars were on hand in the SST division alone. Each week the numbers continue to grow at Spencer…. Racing with five divisions saw the evening end by 11:20 p.m….Rain showers fell for a short time during pre-race practice. With all of the rainy weather this season, this was only Spencer's second show of the year.

This Friday, will see a complete NASCAR Four Star program of Modifieds, SST Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super "6" cars on hand at Spencer. Before the racing action starts the kids will have their first chance of the year at the half mile oval as Kid Bicycle races will be staged on the front stretch. Kids need to be registered at the desk behind the main office by 6:45 p.m., The first bicycle race goes off at 7 p.m. sharp. As for the NASCAR action, it will start at its normal 7:30 p.m. time slot.
